Hostra gifted $4.2 million Garden City house for University President

Image
From Zillow.com Pretty nice digs for Hostra President Susan Poser. The university announced on December 15 that Hostra had acquired a "presidential residence" in Garden City through a "generous donation" from a member of the school's board of trustees. Hofstra did not identify the residence nor name the trustee.  However, sales listings in the area and records from the Nassau County Clerk indicate that this house was sold to Hofstra on Dec. 14 for $4.2 million. Its a pretty good guess this is the Presidential residence, not a dorm for out-of-state students. The land records do not indicate who the generous trustee was but the talk around town is Peter Kalikow. One question, of course, is why did Hofstra acquire a home for its president in Garden City and not Uniondale or Hempstead Village. Hofstra, after all,  is located in Uniondale with a small section in Hempstead Village. Bu

Nassau GOP far outpaces Nassau Democrats in campaign contributions

Image
Nassau GOP chairman Joe Cairo It's true that Nassau Democratic political candidates generally have to rely on their own fund-raising prowess while Nassau Republican candidates usually depend on the county GOP organization to fund their campaigns. But the difference is striking between the two party's fundraising efforts,  as shown in the latest campaign finance reports filed this month. And that difference may affect party support in next month's special election for the vacant District 19 county legislative seat. The Nassau GOP shows an account balance of more than $2 million after raising three-quarters of a million dollars since the beginning of December.                                                        The Nassau Democratic committee reports a balance of not quite $250,000 after raising about $6,600 since the beginning of December.                                                              Both party's reports begin after the 27-day post general election rep

Blakeman calls Feb. 28 special election for vacant 19th District legislative seat

19th Nassau County legislative district Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has called a special election for the end of February to fill the vacancy on the county legislature created when Republican Steve Rhoads last fall defeated Democrat incumbent John Brooks for the 5th District state senate seat. Steve Rhoads Under the County Charter, the county executive must call a special election within 60 days of the vacancy occurring, unless the opening occurs later in the year. So Blakeman just squeaked by the deadline. Rhoads, of Bellmore, was one of several Republicans who won formerly Democratic elected seats in November, from Congress through the state senate and Assembly .  Of course, one of them is now Congressman George Santos, who has admitted "embellishing" his resume and has been caught in multiple lies. Although the 19th legislative district is considered a fairly safe Republican seat,

Despite denials, Lafazan apparently files for a new Congressional bid

Enough, Josh. Day after day, it seems, Nassau Democratic Legislator Josh Lafazan has held a news conference slamming fabulist Republican Congressman George Santos. And day after day, Lafazan, who lives in his parent's Woodbury basement, has said he was only focused on re-election to his county District 18 legislative seat this year, even though his actions clearly showed he was aiming again for Congress. Lafazan ran third last year in a Democratic primary for the 3rd Congressional District seat eventually won by Santos, who appears to have lied about his background, education, heritage, finances, you name it. Santos has refused to resign and cannot be removed unless two-thirds of the U.S. House vote to expel him. With every media outlet in the county writing every detail about Santos, Lafazan has been cited nationally for his pressers. Josh Lafazan But former Republican Nassau County Attorney Joh

Lafazan continues to use county resources to slam Santos, but does little for re-election

Josh Lafazan holding news conference about Santos in county legislative building Nassau Democratic Legis. Josh Lafazan, who came in a poor third last year in a Democratic primary for the Congressional seat won by fabulist Republican George Santos, continues to use county resources to support his near daily news conferences criticizing Santos. He sent out another news release on his county stationary last week to announce a news conference in the county legislative building to protest a report that Congressman Santos, who lied about his public resume, stole $3,000 from a dying service dog's Go-Fund me account -- Santos denies it. Lafazan has repeatedly used his county office to give notice of his many news conferences against Santos. Thursday's presser -- with one Congressional District 3 voter -- was, let us repeat: IN THE COUNTY BUILDING, not on the steps or in front of the legislative building in Mineola. Even Newsday says Lafazan is clearly campaigning for the Congressiona

Sources: Blakeman scores first big win with PBA contract passage

Image
Members of Nassau's Police Benevolent Association today voted overwhelmingly to approve a proposed new contract negotiated by Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman -- the first large union contract ratified during his administration, sources say. Besides a win for Blakeman, the vote for the new 8-1/2 year deal also has to be a negative reflection on former PBA President James McDermott. The new deal is very similar to the agreement McDermott negotiated with former Democratic County Executive Laura Curran, but that went down in flames in Dec. 2020. McDermott retired soon after. The new deal for the union's 1,850 members was negotiated by McDermott's successor, Tommy Shevlin. The PBA vote closed today. The vote may also be result of the increasing influence of "new borns" -- new hires on the police force, whose salaries have stagnated during the contract dispute. Older off

Lafazan parrots Maxine Waters in call to stalk Santos (Updated)

Geroge Santos Will New York Democrats denounce Nassau Legis. Josh Lafazan's "threat of violence" today against Republican Congressman George Santos after the Woodbury Democrat used almost the same quote from U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters that party leaders denounced when they thought it came from a Republican website?  We're waiting. Lafazan called yet another news conference today to criticize Santos, who has been widely condemned by both Democrats and Republicans for lying about his background, work experience and nearly everything else. Lafazan, who lost a Democratic primary in a bid last year to run for the 3rd District Congressional seat won by Santos, again used government resources to promote his presser outside the Queens District office inherited by Santos from U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Glen Cove Democrat who declined to seek re-election last year. In the first three minutes of the news confe

Nassau comptroller releases her assessment audit: Why now? (Updated with pushback from Atty Jeff Gold)

Image
Elaine Phillips Amid a tornado of rumors and news stories about Republican Congressman George Santos and his fabricated resume -- and before Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman's  news conference today about his Hub development deal with Los Vegas Sands, including a possible casino -- Republican County Comptroller Elaine Phillips released her long-awaited audit of the county's "broken" assessment system. You have to wonder about the timing? Why now? The audit is bound to get lost in the craziness about rumored subpoenas of Santos' finances and details of the casino deal, which has been talked about behind closed doors for more than a month. It's almost like Phillips is trying to bury it. Actually, her review finds nothing that hasn't been reported before: She started with former Republican County Executive Ed Mangano's decision in 2015 to hire two expert valuat

Can't get rid of Santos without 2/3 House vote

George Santos Nassau Republicans, as predicted, are expected to call Wednesday for the resignation of 3rd District GOP Congressman George Santos because of lying about his background and possibly fraudulent reporting and spending of his campaign funds. See news alert. A collective call for Santos resignation was expected as soon as he voted for U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy for speaker. Santos voted last week. It will takes one issue away from Nassau and State Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs, who has needled his Republican counterparts for not demanding Santos' ouster.  Jacobs -- and other Democrats -- called for Santos to resign as soon as the New York Times three weeks ago reported that Santos had lied on his public resume. Santos, who was always a sketchy candidate, soundly defeated Democratic commentator and public relations executive Robert Zimmeran for the open 3rd District seat last November. Bu

Is Blakeman running? If so, for what?

Bruce Blakeman Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who doesn't face re-election for three more years, is having another fundraiser tomorrow. Its $500 a person, at the Hendrick's Tavern in Roslyn.  But why? He had a similar fund-raising event a year ago, at the Garden City Hotel,  after defeating incumbent Democrat Laura Curran. That fundraiser also raised questions about his intentions. The Nassau Republican party -- a tight-knit organization --- generally frowns on politicians holding fundraisers in years they are not running, taking potential donations away from party candidates who are up for election. This year, Republicans on the county legislature and GOP town supervisors will be running for re-election-- though that isn't until this fall. But Blakeman often doesn't play by the party rules. For example, he endorsed Democrat Laura Gillen for Hempstead Town Supervisor against

Time for Santos protestors to get a new act

Image
Call to action by Robert Zimmernan supporters Enough already with the calls for an investigation of new Republican Congressman George Santos, an admitted liar and fabulist. Santos protestors need to find a new angle.  Every law enforcement agency apparently known to man already has announced investigations into Santos, who may be from Queens or may be from Huntington and who appears to have fabricated most of his public resume: The Nassau District Attorney, the Queens District Attorney, the State Attorney General, the U.S. attorney, the Federal Elections Commission, perhaps the House ethics committee. Even Brazil law enforcement has announced it will revive a 2008 fraud case against Santos. And of course every news outlet in the country has focused on examining Santos. Who else is supposed to investigate? Yet Democrat Robert Zimmerman, a longtime political commentator who lost to Republican Santos, le

Repeat Nassau property tax assessment error appears confirmed

Image
Looks like the talk earlier this week about a repeat assessment error was accurate: The Nassau Assessment department again erroneously placed a tax-exempt North Hempstead church on the county assessment roll, resulting in a near $500,000 general tax bill for the New Hyde park property bill. The county made the same error for the school tax bills and assessment promised to fix the mistake. But according to North Hempstead Tax receiver Charles Berman it wasn't corrected. Charles Berman See the above letter. Last October, the school tax bill was nearly $677,000, Newsday reported. This month, the tab is hearly $489,000. Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman's office did not respond to questions from this blog about rumored repeat errors. He also has not responded to a letter from Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D-Freeport) asking about the same errors. Wonder how Presiding Officer Rich Ni
