Congressional candidates race to raise money before June 30 FEC deadline

The Republican speaker of the U.S. House Kevin McCarthy was on Long Island Saturday to boost the fund-raising efforts of several New York GOP members of Congress, including 4th District U.S. Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, an Island Park Republican. A 4th District candidate Laura Gillen, a Rockville Centre Democrat who lost to D'Esposito last year,  has been sending near daily emails imploring her supporters to give a little -- or a lot --  to help her reach a $15,000 fundraising goal. Former State Sen. Anna Kaplan, who has announced a bid for the 3rd District Congressional seat now held by Republican U.S. Rep. George Santos, has also bee

Comptroller Phillips, reporting 4th-year-in-a-row surplus, tells NIFA to give up control

Nassau Comptroller Elaine Phillips Nassau's elected Comptroller Elaine Phillips, a Republican, released the county's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report Friday and it is a stunner, again. The report comes from outside auditors and is considered the final word on county finances. Phillips says auditors concluded that Nassau ended 2022 with a $435.2 million surplus in all ten or so of its governmental funds. She says the county finished last year with a $234.2 surplus in its three major operating funds: the general fund, the police district fund and the sewer and storm water district fund. Both surpluses are somewhat below 2021's financial results but are still healthy numbers, according to generally accepted accounting principles. But the county's state appointed seven-member financial control board, the Nassau Interim Finance Authority -- which consists of six Democrats or Democratic p

Millions of dollars in repairs in Nassau under emergency declarations

Image
From News12 Long Island Nassau is proceeding with nearly $52 million in repairs to the burned out 2nd police precinct and the East Meadow jail roof under emergency declarations by County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican. Unlike most county contracts, emergency repairs do not need approval by the county legislature before work begins. To expedite the work, the county executive can simply issue a notice to proceed, usually after selecting contractors through a normal bidding process. In the past ten days, Public Works Commissioner Ken Arnold,  in memos to legislative leaders and other high-ranking county officials, outlined plans to rebuild the Woodbury precinct for a total project cost of $30,400,000 and to repair the roof and mechanical systems in Building 832 at the Corrections Center for a total cost of $21,825,000. The memos, he said, were the required notice to the legislature, the county comptroller

Casino hearing aftermath: Legitimate press passes required

After an incident at the Casino hearing last month, majority Republicans on the Nassau legislature yesterday posted a new placard in the legislative chambers announcing the press pass policy. The large placard was placed inside the legislative chambers, near the front, on the Republican side of the chambers, ie on the left facing the front. It was visible to everyone who attended yesterday's legislative committee meetings. The policy requires members of the press to display upon request an official press pass issued by the Nassau police department. It also says that official press passes from the city, Suffolk County and the Port Authority are also acceptable. Just to make sure everyone understands, Republicans issued a news release yesterday reiterating the requirement. The policy is not new. It's been around for years, th

Cairo and Todd Kaminsky's wife win appointments to higher level jobs

Joe Cairo Two totally different appointments were made this week: one national and one state. First, Nassau GOP Chairman Joe Cairo was elected a Republican national committeeman at a state committee meeting in Albany this week. There are two GOP national committee members from each state. The other from New York is Jennifer Saul Rich from the city. What does a national committee person do? According to the Cairo press release, they "interact" with the national committee and "create and maintain national party policies. But here's the main job:: "They also assist in raising and securing financial resources and support for Republican federal candidates." Cairo is not the only New York national committeeman from Long Island. Public relations executive Robert Zimmerman of Great Neck has been a Democratic national committeeman for a many years. Robert Zimmerman Asked today if he had any

Nassau Inspector General Jodi Franzese is back! Seems like she never left

Image
Jodi Franzese The last time we heard anything about Nassau's Inspector General Jodi Franzese, she was leaving to take a job as head of the Nassau District Attorney's public corruption bureau, starting June 2. This came after the 12 member Republican majority on the county legislature declined to renew her four-year term as the legislature's independent watchdog -- much to the lamentations and protests from the Democratic minority on the 19-member body.  Franzese had been appointed in December 2018. She had been working as a holdover after her term term expired in January. Republicans said nothing bad about Franzese in declining to move forward on her reappointment, but they had never been really enthusiastic about the inspector general position to begin with. Democrats had pushed and pressed for an inspector general to oversee procurement issues since 2015 following a series of scandals in t

Hot 97 concert spat a win-win for both Blakeman and Solages

Yes, the Hot 97 hip-hop "Summer Jam 2023" indoor and outdoor concert will go on as scheduled today at the UBS arena in Elmont, despite Friday's political kerfluffle. The gates were to open at 2 and outdoor show at 2:30. The concert's line up includes hip-hop artists Ice Spice, Coi Leray, GloRilla, Lola Brooke, French Montana, Fivio Foreign, Lil TJay, the LOX and Cardi B. Even the most out-of-touch conservatives have probably heard of Cardi B, if only for criticism of her sexually explicit lyrics.  The spat began when Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican playing to his conservative base, filed suit in State Supreme Court Thursday evening to stop a free outdoor portion of the concert, called the "Festival Village." Bruce Blakeman   He termed the outdoor concert a public nuisance, citing "the riot-like behavior and criminal violations that plagued prior S
