Nassau GOP far outpaces Nassau Democrats in campaign contributions
Nassau GOP chairman Joe Cairo |
It's true that Nassau Democratic political candidates generally have to rely on their own fund-raising prowess while Nassau Republican candidates usually depend on the county GOP organization to fund their campaigns.
But the difference is striking between the two party's fundraising efforts, as shown in the latest campaign finance reports filed this month.
And that difference may affect party support in next month's special election for the vacant District 19 county legislative seat.
The Nassau GOP shows an account balance of more than $2 million after raising three-quarters of a million dollars since the beginning of December.
The Nassau Democratic committee reports a balance of not quite $250,000 after raising about $6,600 since the beginning of December.
Both party's reports begin after the 27-day post general election report from last year, which were filed to basically clean up the fundraising for the Nov.8 election from Oct. 28 through early December.
Nassau and State Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs |
In the post election report, the Democratic committee ended with $256,000 in the bank. And that was after Nassau and state Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs wrote a check to the committee on Nov. 1 for $25,000.
Remember that many Democrats complained that Jacobs had not put enough on-the-ground support in Nassau for their candidates after most got skunked in the election.
Maybe the complainers should have kicked in a few bucks themselves to help their candidates.
Jacobs, meanwhile, was busy supporting Gov. Kathy Hochul's successful campaign for New York state governor.
Party candidates for the Feb.28 election are not yet nominated but there is talk that former Democratic state sen. John Brooks may try for the legislative seat vacated by the man who beat him in November, Republican State Sen. Steve Rhoads.
Brooks campaign committee reported $38,675 in its account as of Jan. 17.
