New chairman for NUMC?

One source is putting out the name of a lawyer, from the Five Towns, who is involved in nursing home turnarounds, as Nassau County Executive Laura Curran's next choice for chairman of the Nassau University Medical Center. Curran's people have not responded to inquiries about him; whether she will nominate him to the position vacated Friday by her last nominee, Robert Detor. Negative answers are easy: "No, I never heard of him," or "No, who told you that?"  Positive answers are more problematic: If they are planning an announcement and don't want to give it away early, silence is often the response. But, sometimes a non-response is simply a non-response.  We'll see. If Curran has already selected a successor, then Detor had warned her early of his resignation. Detor, a

Detor said he cannot accept the outcome of NUMC's board deliberations of an event he does not identify,  though he says it was documented by an independent review and "issues of serious concern were identified and presented to the board." He wrote: "It has become clear to me I can no longer align my service on the board with my professional, moral and ethical standards."  He  recommends that Curran ask the state health department to review "not only the current circumstances but the overall condition of the corporation's governance.&

Singas, Solages and Mejias all get Cuomo nominations (UPDATED)

Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas Gov. Andrew Cuomo not only nominated Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas to the Court of Appeals today, he also nominated to the Court of Claims Linda Mejias, sister of former Nassau legislator Dave Mejias and current Democratic Oyster Bay Town leader, and Phil Solages, brother of Assemb. Michaelle C. Solages (D-Elmont) and also of Nassau Legis. Carrie Solages (D-Elmont.) This is according to a tweet from Dan Clark, the host of NYNOW_PBS . (Update: Cuomo posted the appointments on his government website at 2:06 p.m.) The nominations were politically strategic, which suggests that Cuomo is running again next year despite numerous investigations into alleged misconduct, including sexual harrassment and cover-up of nursing home deaths. Cuomo has denied any wrongdoing. Democrat Singas is supported by New York's affluent Greek community, who will likely make th

Andrew Cuomo today at Jones Beach news conference   Despite numerous investigations into alleged misconduct ,   Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues to hold news conferences about the coronavirus pandemic,  weaving in family stories and corny jokes while urging everyone to get vaccinated. He collects kudos from selected guests while denying any wrongdoing and defiantly refusing calls to resign from fellow Democrats. Cuomo had another news conference today at Jones Beach, announcing a program to offer vaccinations in state parks.  His in-your-face bravado has won him some support, according to a Siena College Research Institute poll released today.  His popularity has inched up statewide -- from 40 percent favorable last month to 44 percent favorable this month. But not in the suburbs. His ratings continued to slump among New York's downstate suburban voters, acco

Nassau County parkland to remain county parkland (Updated)

From Mapquest.com Syosset voters last week killed a $10.5 million deal for Nassau to transfer ownership of 35 acres of the county's Stillwell Woods Preserve to the Syosset School District.  Defeated by 89 votes, the deal called for the county to pay the school district $3 million toward improving a portion of the 270-acre North Shore preserve. The school district was going to pitch in $7.5 million  - taking $2 million from reserve funds while borrowing $5.5 million -- to create a "state of the art" athletic facility. What? Where did this come from? Giving away county parkland or even licensing its use has always been a big deal in the past. But nothing about Stillwell Woods was presented publicly to the county legislature, which must vote on any transfer of county land. And there was no vote by the state legislature, which must approve any "alienation" of public parkland. The deal wa
