Lafazan parrots Maxine Waters in call to stalk Santos (Updated)
Geroge Santos |
Will New York Democrats denounce Nassau Legis. Josh Lafazan's "threat of violence" today against Republican Congressman George Santos after the Woodbury Democrat used almost the same quote from U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters that party leaders denounced when they thought it came from a Republican website?
We're waiting.
Lafazan called yet another news conference today to criticize Santos, who has been widely condemned by both Democrats and Republicans for lying about his background, work experience and nearly everything else.
Lafazan, who lost a Democratic primary in a bid last year to run for the 3rd District Congressional seat won by Santos, again used government resources to promote his presser outside the Queens District office inherited by Santos from U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Glen Cove Democrat who declined to seek re-election last year.
In the first three minutes of the news conference (again only listened to three minutes), Lafazan said, " “I am here to remind you, George, we will make every single day in the district a living nightmare. You will not be able to go to the bagel store; you won’t be able to go to the supermarket; you won’t be able to get a bite to eat. Everywhere you go we will be here to hold you accountable.”
Compare that to what Democrat Waters said at a rally in Los Angeles on June 2018 about the Republican Trump administration.
"Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that (Trump) Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere."
When the website Cuomowatch in Jan. 2021 tweeted the Waters' quote, but substituted "the Cuomo administration" for the words "that Cabinet", New York Democrats went crazy -- even though the satirical website attributed the tweet to the "MaxineWatersWatch."

Then-Democratic County Executive Laura Curran tweeted that the Cuomowatch message "was completely unacceptable. Nassau County has zero tolerance for hatred and inciting violence."
Democrat Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone tweeted, "Democrats and Republicans must denounce this threat of violence against our fellow New Yorkers."
Also expressing righteous outrage were then-State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, a Long Beach Democrat, and then-State Sen. Anna Kaplan, a Great Neck Democrat; State Senate Majority leader, Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins, State Assembly majority leader, Democrat Carl L. Heastie, and a slew of Democratic state senators and assembly members.
Of course this was months before they all turned on Cuomo and demanded his resignation after he was targeted with allegations of sexual abuse and harassment.

At least Lafazan came up with a new tactic against Santos today, rather than continually call for investigations and for fabulist Santos to resign.
Every possible law enforcement agency already appears to have launched probes into Santos. Even Nassau Republicans called for Santos to resign despite a good chance that a Democrat would win the seat in a special election. Every news outlet across the nation also have pounced on every alleged Santos transgressions.
The LIPatch, for example, reported that two former friends claim Santos was wearing a stolen scarf at a Jan. 5, 2021 rally.
But Santos has refused to step down. House Leader Kevin McCarthy, who needs Santos to back his slim GOP majority, also has declined to act.
Here is the Lafazan news alert: (Notice its on his official government stationary, but nobody seems to find this inappropriate)*
*Update: Turns out that at last one former government lawyer objects to Lafazan's use of government resources to attack Santos:
"It is not just inappropriate, it is a crime," said Republican John Ciampoli, former Nassau County attorney and a longtime elections lawyer.
He said federal campaign financial reports show that Lafazan still has an active campaign account for the 3rd District Congressional seat, even though it consists of alot of debt.
Under federal law, that means Lafazan is still a candidate for the Congressional seat, he said. Because Lafazan cites NY-03 voters in his county-paid letter, "he is using taxpayer dollars to support his campaign," Ciampoli opines. "It is clear he is there to talk about the Congressional District for which he is an active candidate."
And taxpayer resources cannot be used to support a local, state or federal election campaign, he said.
Remember that Ciampoli is an innovative thinker.
Still waiting for Democratic response.
