Third time Lafazan claims to have filed bills that don't exist

Image
The start of the Nassau County tourism commercial                                                                                     It sure attracts publicity to announce that you are proposing good government bills. Nassau Legis. Josh Lafazan, a Woodbury Democrat, has done it at least three times so far this year. Too bad he never actually filed such bills, according to legislative staff. Today, Newsday's The Point takes aim at county tourism commercials that include the name and image of Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Also the names of county legislators. Then it says, "The episode prompted Lafazan to propose a bill that would prohibit elected officials from using their image or likeness in any taxpayer-funded county promotional advertisements or commercials. That would include just featuring a politician’s name." But legislative staff say they are not aware of any such

Clavin mailer features Schumer

Democrats have complained for decades about the many, many, many mailers issued by Hempstead Town, which has been under Republican control for more than 100 years, except from 2018 through 2019 when Democrat Laura Gillen was supervisor with a Republican-majority on the town board. The mailers inevitably feature photographs of the incumbent Republican elected officials touting their recent accomplishments. Democrats gripe that the mailings are political; Republicans counter that they provide important information to town residents. But Democrats can't complain about an April four-page "ecology update." Featured in the front page with Republican Supervisor Don Clavin is Chuck Schumer, a Democratic U.S. senator from New York who also serves as the senate majority leader. The two are pictured clinking water bottles. Clavin praises Schumer for securing $5 million in federal funds to help Hemp

Harendra Singh continues to win delays in sentencing on 8 felony guilty pleas

It's been seven years since restaurateur and Oyster Bay concessionaire Harendra Singh secretly pleaded guilty to eight felonies for bribing former Nassau Republican County Executive Ed Mangano, the late Oyster Bay Town Republican supervisor John Venditto and other Oyster Bay Town officials. Yet he is still free, apparently still living in his Syosset mansion despite not paying his mortgage since 2014, while Mangano serves 12 years in federal prison after being found guilty in March 2019 of accepting gifts and other kickbacks from Singh in return for pressuring town officials to guarantee $20 million in private loans to Singh. Venditto was acquitted in federal court of participating in the loan guarantee scheme but died of lung cancer in 2020, a broken man who was nearly bankrupted fighting the charges. Mangano's wife Linda is on home confinement after serving five months in prison following her convi

Gambling, traffic, pollution are nothing new around the Nassau Coliseum

Image
From: Mapcarta.com Opponents to the proposed Las Vegas Sands casino at the  Nassau Coliseum -- primarily private Hofstra University and tony Garden City -- complained vehemently at the first hearing of the Nassau Legislature two weeks ago about the $4 billion plan for a casino, hotel and resort in the Nassau Hub. Hofstra president Susan Poser, who lives in a $4 million university-owned mansion in Garden City, said "It would create serious damage and hazardous conditions for our community -- gambling addiction, crime, traffic congestion and pollution." Garden City Mayor Mary Flanagan, and other Garden city residents, said much the same thing. But wagering, traffic congestion, pollution are nothing new around the Coliseum. Roosevelt Raceway operated just north of the Coliseum site from 1940 until it closed in 1988. The once popular harness racing track attracted large crowds, who wagered on the horses, crea

Amid speculation about Santos replacement, don't forget Mazi Melesa Pilip

Mazi Melesa Pilip All the talk about potential candidates to replace fabulist U.S. Rep. George Santos seem to concentrate on Democrats. City and State just today published a list of possible Democratic hopefuls after a Democratic Congressman this week demanded --  unsuccessfully -- that Santos be expelled from the U.S. House. Santos, of course, is the mostly unknown Republican who scored an upset victory over Democratic insider Robert Zimmerman last year in race for Nassau's North Shore 3rd Congressional District seat,  vacated by U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove). After Santos won, the New York Times disclosed that he lied about most of his background, sparking hundreds of news stories, protests,  and, just recently, federal corruption charges. Both Republicans and Democrats had called for Santos to resign even before he was charged by the feds with fraud, money laundering and lying about his finances.

Vilardi, Garry win one for Sanitary District One (for now)

Hempstead Sanitary District One It's been ten months since voters in Hempstead Town's Sanitation District One voted for its commissioners but the election was only decided yesterday. And it's possible that a very detailed 14-page decision by Nassau Supreme Court Justice Randy Sue Marber could still be appealed. Her decision is complicated, but the politics behind the fight are even more convoluted. First, as background,  the sanitation district "provides municipal solid waste collection, recycling, transfer and disposal services to well over 50,000 residents and various commercial and institutional properties in the Villages of Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Lawrence, Woodmere, Woodsburgh and portions of the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Green Acres, " according to its website. It is run by an elected board of five commissioners and h

Odds and ends from Nassau casino hearing

Sands Corp. rendering of its proposed Nassau Coliseum Casino development   Nassau's 9-hour meeting Monday about the proposed transfer of the Nassau Coliseum lease to Las Vegas Sands for development of a casino in the county's HUB began with Legis. Kevan Abrahams, leader of the seven Democrats on the 19-member legislature, announcing that he was recusing himself from participating. The Freeport Democrat said it pained him to step away but he had a conflict of interest. Kevan Abrahams "I was looking forward to participating and hearing from you," he said. But, he added, "Because the conflict is real and does pertain to family member I have been advised by counsel not to participate in debate or discussion or final vote." He gave no details. So let's see what he said in his required written recusal form According to the legislative rules, a county officer must promptl

Jay Jacobs under attack again

Jay Jacobs on News 12 A group called "Replace Jay Jacobs" promised to protest outside the state Democratic semi-annual meeting tonight in Albany, demanding Gov. Kathy Hochul replace longtime state and Nassau Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs. The 1,700 party delegates and activists calling for Jacob's ouster don't suggest a successor but a seven- page report issued this week includes a long list of qualifications for a new chairman. For example, it specifies that the next chairman be dedicated to Democratic values, including but not limited to:        • diversity, equity and inclusion in terms of age, color, disability, gender, gender          identity, marital status/partnership status, national origin, pregnancy and lactation          accommodation, race, religion/creed, sexual orientation, and status as a veteran          or active military service member. Lafazan and Gillen use Santos arrest to campaign again for Congress.

Image
Democratic Nassau Legis. Josh Lafazan jumped on the first news report that fabulist Republican Congressman George Santos was going to be arrested and immediately sent emails out last night seeking donations: Not for Lafazan's legislative re-election this November, but to run again for the 3rd District Congressional seat. This morning, former Democratic Hempstead Town Supervisor, Laura Gillen, who lost her Congressional bid for the 4th District seat to Republican Anthony D'Esposito last year after U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice decided not to run again, tweeted she was in the race again this, year. And asked for money.  Both Lafazan and Gillen lost in Congressional districts last year that were considered Democratic seats. Santos today denied the charges. And tweeted a request for money after pleading not guilty. There are other candidates with less familiar names seeking the seat but as of now, Santos has said he is not resigning. The only way he can get kicked out is if the House v
