Surprise: Democrat Scianablo wants to curb the use of Hempstead take-home cars -- UPDATED re Newsday editorial board

Is there a local political candidate anywhere who doesn't promise to cut down on government-owned cars being taken home by government employees and used as their own private vehicles? Usually fueled up at government gas pumps?

Both Nassau  Republicans and Democrats running for government offices have announced such plans for decades.

Now Democrat Joseph Scianablo, who is running for Hempstead Town Supervisor in November, has joined the chorus.

He told the Newsday editorial board that he will "seek a full accounting for how town employees' take-home cars are used and what the fuel costs are," according to Newsday.

Of course, former Republican Supervisor Don Clavin already curbed the use of take-home cars according to the Garden City Patch.

"Clavin said that he has consolidated the 40 "take-home" cars to 19 "pool" vehicles, which will be used only by authorized employees during work hours or emergencies," Patch reported.

Clavin's successor, John Ferretti, who was appointed supervisor by the Republican-controlled town board in August, hasn't had time to announce similar plans because he has been too busy fighting legal challenges to his appointment.

But if his appointment is legally confirmed, or if voters elect him in November, he will undoubtedly make the same promise since Ferretti says he is a tax cutter.

Isn't it amazing that there are any take-home cars left in use in any government anymore?

UPDATE:

It should be noted that Republicans are boycotting Newsday editorial board interviews -- though Newsday did not cover the news conference where all current Republican candidates unanimously announced the snub.

Republicans cited the "disgusting cartoon which lampooned the assassination of Charlie Kirk" as well as what they called the editorial board's  progressive, anti-Republican views.

  2. Too bad he lost and nothing will be done about the cars. It’s a shame.
