Two new district judges and a Surrogate Court switch
Two new District Court judges are expected to be appointed by the Nassau legislature this month while a new Nassau Surrogate will take office next January.
All are considered competent lawyers, but of course politics play a part in the moves.
James Saladino, a Suffolk District Court judge, has been recommended by Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman to be appointed a judge in Nassau's 4th District Court, which covers Oyster Bay and Glen Cove.
James Saladino is the brother of Republican Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino and is the son of a late Republican Supreme Court Justice Joseph J. Saladino. James Saladino, who served in various Suffolk legal position, must have moved into Nassau.
Also recommended for appointment is Maria Boultadakis to Nassau's 2nd District Court in Hempstead.
A law clerk for three successive Republican Supreme Court justices, Boudtadakis is the daughter of Nick Boudtakakis, owner of the Sands Castle in Franklin Square. The restaurant and catering firm is a favorite Nassau Republican hangout, particularly for Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Cairo.
The Pat Cairo Family Foundation, a charity created by Joe Cairo in honor of his late wife Pat after her death from cancer, had its annual dinner there last week.
Then there is Nassau Surrogate's court, where lucrative assignments to handle estates and guardianships are handed out, usually to politically connected lawyers of all parties.
The current surrogate Margaret Reilly was elected to a ten-year term in 2015. But the Nassau GOP did not renominate her to run for a new term this November even though she hasn't reached retirement age of 70.
Reilly is the daughter of the late Joseph Reilly, a former Republican assemblyman, former Glen Cove GOP leader and former Nassau County general services commissioner. Yes, he had political clout.

Sources say both parties were unhappy with Margaret Reilly's management of the office -- whether that means she didn't do a good job or whether she didn't hand out appointments to the correct politically connected lawyers -- depends on who you talk to.
Republican Nassau Supreme Court Justice David Sullivan is cross-endorsed by both parties in November to be the next Surrogate in January. Sullivan reportedly is close to Cairo.
