Cairo and Todd Kaminsky's wife win appointments to higher level jobs

Joe Cairo

Two totally different appointments were made this week: one national and one state.

First, Nassau GOP Chairman Joe Cairo was elected a Republican national committeeman at a state committee meeting in Albany this week.

There are two GOP national committee members from each state. The other from New York is Jennifer Saul Rich from the city.

What does a national committee person do? According to the Cairo press release, they "interact" with the national committee and "create and maintain national party policies.

But here's the main job:: "They also assist in raising and securing financial resources and support for Republican federal candidates."

Cairo is not the only New York national committeeman from Long Island.

Public relations executive Robert Zimmerman of Great Neck has been a Democratic national committeeman for a many years.

Asked today if he had any national-committeeman advice for Cairo, Zimmerman said, "Joe Cairo doesn't need advice from me. He does very well on his own."

At the state, Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, announced 11 appointments to the New York State Court of Claims.

Only one appointee is from Long Island:   Ellen Tobin of Nassau.

Hochul lists Tobin's qualifications: a partner for "Westerman, Ball Ederer Miller Zucker & Sharfstein as well has serving as a law clerk for federal Magistrate  Kathleen Tomlinson.

Not mentioned is that Tobin is married to former State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, a Democrat from Long Beach who decided against seeking re-election last year after he lost a bid to become Nassau County District Attorney in 2021.

The appointment is apparently a nice consolation prize for Tobin who screened with the Nassau Bar Association in March for Family Court judge, but did not get party cross-endorsement.

The state Court of Claims handles civil lawsuits against the state of New York and other state entities and authorities. It has no jurisdiction over any city, county or town government.
