Santos: A gift that keeps on giving for Democrats - UPDATED

As predicted, Republican Congressman George Santos announced his 2024 re-election campaign in a tweet today.

And as expected, local Democrats are making hay with it  -- as they do with every unflattering story and critique of the 3rd District representative, who has admitted to lying about much of his background.

Nassau and State Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs issued a statement saying that Santos is 16 days late.

"April Fool's Day was on the first of this month and that would have been a more appropriate date to announce his re-election campaign." Jacobs said.

Nassau Legis. Josh Lafazan, who lost a primary for the Democratic 3rd District nomination last year, used the Santos announcement to raise money to run again for Congress -- even though he is also a candidate for re-election to the Nassau legislature this year.

In his fundraising appeals by email and text, Lafazan accused Santos of "personal" attacks and insults. He carefully edited an old photo that Santos had tweeted Saturday of Lafazan's "real" chin prior to what Lafazan said was lifesaving "corrective jaw surgery" last year. Lafazan cropped the photo off below his nose to eliminate before- and after- chin comparisons.

Here is the text:

Here is the original santos p;ost:

 Here is Lafazan's current profile:

Santos, who is either from Queens or Huntington, has been the subject of thousands of news stories since the New York Times disclosed in December that much of his public resume was false. Thirst for Santos news seems insatiable.

Santos tweeting of Lafazan's "real chin", for example, got 10 million views.

That has been a blessing for Democrats who take advantage of every Santos story to gain publicity for themselves.

Lafazan's responses to Santos were viewed by more than 100,000 readers.

Republicans have tried to distance themselves from Santos by calling for his resignaton.

Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Cairo issued a rebuttal to Santos' announcement today:

“The Nassau County Republican Committee is focused on the future, and George Santos has no place in upcoming Nassau GOP campaigns.  We will not nominate George Santos for re-election to Congress or for any other office.  The serial liar has disgraced the House of Representatives and has deceived the public.  His actions and comments have been designed to mislead the public about his background, qualifications and virtually every other facet of his public persona.

"If George Santos should actually launch a re-election campaign, the Nassau County Republican Committee will nominate a well-qualified candidate who is honest, forthright and worthy of the public’s trust and support.  The Nassau GOP has interacted with several prospective candidates who would defeat the ‘pretender’ who is currently occupying the office and win election against all other prospective opponents.

"It’s time for George Santos to go!”

But Santos has refused to resign and has aligned himself with the conservative wing of the Republican- led House. Republicans have not taken any action to expel him because they need his vote for their narrow majority.

So Democrats delight in linking Republicans to Santos.

For example, Jacobs today tweaked the New York Republicans in his statement today:

" I am sure that Congressmembers D’Esposito, Garbarino, Lalota, Lawler, Molinaro, and Williams are all very excited to be running with George Santos," Jacobs said.

A perfect illustration of the headline:
