Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced today that he has reached a new labor agreement with the county's Corrections Officers Benevolent Association, whose members have been working without a contract since Dec. 31, 2017.
He did not give any financial details of his deal with COBA president Brian Sullivan
Any accord will have to be ratified by union members, the county legislature, and finally, the county's financial control board.
The county's budget office reports there were 731 COBA members as of June 30.
But reaching a deal with COBA, the county's third largest union, would be a major accomplishment for the Republican county executive, who took office in January.
The county's two other large unions -- the Police Benevolent Association and the Civil Service Employees Association -- are still working without a contracts and have been since Dec. 2017.
Former Democratic County Executive Laura Curran made deals with two smaller police unions-- the Detectives Association and the Superior Officers Association -- but her agreement with the PBA was voted down by its membership. She did not reach any accord with COBA or the CSEA during her four-year term.
Nassau has enough money set aside in it budget to cover the costs of new union deals, officials have said.
Here is what Blakeman said in an email from the county executive's spokesman:
"After seven months of extensive negotiations, I am proud to announce that my administration has reached an agreement on a new contract with the Correction officer's Benevolent association. I value and appreciate the hard work correction officers perform every day, and I believe this contract will fairly compensate them for their service."
Blakeman tested positive for Covid-19 last weekend. His spokesman Chris Boyle said he was out of quarantine.
