Suozzi has a long road ahead of him to the Governor's office

U.S. Congressman Tom Suozzi, a former Nassau County executive, has a tough path ahead of him to win the Democratic primary for governor in New York State, according to a poll released today.

A majority of voters don't know who he is, according to the Siena College Research Institute poll.

Not Democrats, not Republicans, not even downstate voters.

Worse, the Glen Cove Democrat ties with Bill de Blasio, outgoing New York City mayor, in the percentage of New Yorkers who would vote for him in the Democratic primary: 6 percent.

Only the category "vote for someone else, unnamed" got a lower percentage.

The poll sampled 785 New York registered voters from Nov.  29 through Dec. 3.

Suozzi is not bashful nor a wallflower so it's difficult to see why he's still unknown.

According to the poll, 65 percent of New York voters don't know him or have no opinion of him, including 70 percent of independent voters.

As for Democrats, who would be voting in the primary, 61 percent statewide never heard of Suozzi while 22 percent hold a favorable opinion.

Even 56 percent of downstate suburban voters don't know Suozzi or have no opinion of him.

Both statewide and in the downstate suburbs, 36 percent of voters would cast their ballots for Gov. Kathy Hochul, who inherited the governor's office when Andrew Cuomo resigned in August.

More downstate voters would choose Attorney General Letitia James than statewide voters: 21 percent to 18 percent.

Downstate voters prefer Suozzi to deBlasio or New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, but not by much.

And take a look at President Joe Biden's poll numbers in Blue New York.

Nearly 60 percent of New Yorkers think Democrat Biden is doing a fair to poor job as president.

In downstate suburban suburbs, including Nassau and Suffolk,  72 percent of voters say Biden is doing a fair or poor job as president compared to 28 percent who rate his job performance as excellent or good.

Those negative numbers help explain why there was a red wave on Long Island this November, with Democratic Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Democratic Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini losing to Republican challengers.

Statewide, 74 percent of independent or other party voters say Biden is doing a fair to poor job. Of those, 50 percent rate his performance as poor.

If Suozzi wants to get votes, he may want to take down that photo of him and Biden from Facebook.
