Town of Hempstead Democrats finally announce candidates

Weeks after Oyster Bay and North Hempstead Democrats announced their list of town candidates for the November elections, the Town of Hempstead is finally out with their nominees, which includes one longtime incumbent.

Other than Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, a civil rights leader who has been re-elected to the Hempstead Town Board since 1999, the candidates appear to be first time candidates for municipal government elected posts.

Unclear whether that's good or bad in their run against Republican incumbents.

Garden city attorney Jason Abelove is the candidate challenging Republican incumbent supervisor Don Clavin. Abelove lives in Oceanside and, according to the press release, has been designated a "super lawyer", which apparently is a title chosen by other lawyers.

"Leading the town should not be about photo ops and getting your name in front of as many people as possible every day," Abelove said in the announcement. "It's no place for a career politician."

Abelove, an employment rights lawyer, represented a Hempstead Village police officer last year who filed a $1 million lawsuit against the village and police department, alleging that he had been discriminated against because he is white.

Olena Nicks

Olena Nicks of Uniondale is running against  incumbent Republican Town Clerk Kate Murray.

Nicks is vice president of the Uniondale Public Library Board and is a 10-year veteran of the Uniondale Fire Department.

The release says Nicks is manager of Foundation Relations & Donor Communications for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

"I am serious about running the Office of the Town Clerk, which is so important to our residents, not perpetually running for my next political job," Nicks said in the release. "The Office needs a full-time leader, so it can be modernized and made more efficient and responsive to residents."

There is talk in political circles that Nicks wanted to primary Goosby for the town board seat, but a deal was made for Nicks to run for town clerk while Goosby agreed to endorse County Executive Laura Curran, a Democrat running for re-election this fall. That may just be talk, though.

  Oceanside lawyer Aaron Eitan Meyer is challenging incumbent Republican Councilman Anthony D'Esposito for the 4th district seat. The release describes him as an author, research analyst and attorney.
 
Lawyer Mathew Galante of Levittown is challenging Republican incumbent Councilman Dennis Dunne. The release says Galante graduated Phil Beta Kappa from Cornell and received his law degree from Columbia University.

Finally, Singh is in prison

                                                                                   Eight years after Harendra Singh pleaded guilty to bribing Nassau County and Oyster Bay Town officials in exchange for $20 million in personal loan guarantees, the former Oyster Bay restaurateur has been incarcerated. Singh reported to federal prison in Otisville, NY on Friday. He originally was supposed to begin serving his four-year sentence last January but received several unexplained extensions. Otisville, according to the Chicago Tribune,  has tennis courts, horseshoes, cardio equipment  "and it sounds like the closest thing the federal prison system has to sleepaway camp." Nassau CSEA contract deal -- talk of the county for two days -- finally announced (UPDATED)

Talk around Nassau County for the past two days has been that Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman had struck a new labor agreement, signed Monday, with the county's largest union, the Nassau Civil Service Employees Association. The CSEA, which include most non-law enforcement county employees, has been working without a contract since the end of 2017. As of June, there were 3,359 fulltime CSEA members. An announcement went out late today but it didn't say much: A spokesman for Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman did not respond to an email today asking when the CSEA deal would be announced. Everyone is looking at the CSEA because exempt employees -- county workers who are hired and fired at will -- traditionally are given the same benefits as the union members. But the exempts are not happy with some of the rumors about the agreement: one is that the CSEA will take a lesser health insurance plan in return for an upfront payment, perhaps of $1,500, for each member....
