Ka-Ching! Curran has $2 million in bank for campaign; Schnirman not so much

Looks like Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is going to be hard to beat this year.

According to campaign disclosure reports filed Friday, the first-term Democrat from Baldwin has more than $2 million in her campaign coffers to fight against any Republican challenger this November.

Curran raised $842,478.74 in the last six months, the report shows, while spending $265,619.63.

That brought her total to  $2,066,586.96.

Some of Curran's top donors were Elaine Langone who gave $10,000. Langone is the wife of Ken Langone, Home Depot founder and ex-director of the New York Stock Exchange, who was a large contributor to former Democratic County Executive Thomas Suozzi. Langone is known more for supporting Republicans but he backed Suozzi's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign against Elliott Spitzer more than a decade ago.

Also contributing to Curran was the Simon Property Group, which owns Roosevelt Field and the Walt Whitman Shopping Center. Through CEO David Simon, it gave $25,000.

Unions contributed heavily to Curran while, somewhat ironically, Clare Rose Associates, which faced an 82-day Teamsters strike in 2017, also gave $5,000.

Karli Hagedorn, chair of the non-profit Friends of Sands Point Preserve which runs the county-owned north shore park, gave $20,000.

John Donnelly, who was appointed in November to be the the $475,000 chief operating officer of the Nassau University Medical Center, gave Curran $1,000 on Dec. 31. Although Curran has banned contributions from her staff, she was quick to say in January that she doesn't run the public hospital in East Meadow.

The law firm of Harris Beach, whose former partner Jared Kasschau was appointed by Curran to be her county attorney while partner Tom Garry represents the Nassau IDA, gave Curran $10,000.

Anthony Scaramucci, who served ten days as President Donald Trump's spokesman, gave Curran $5,000, records show.

Nassau Comptroller Jack Schnirman, another Democrat whose term is up this year, reports a total $515,205.40 in his campaign account. 

Schnirman, the former Long Beach city manager who has faced intense criticism for his management of the south shore city, raised $173,803.34 and spent $61,671.60, reports show.

Only eight individuals who list their address as Long Beach gave to Schnirman, They contributed a total $2,096.

Curran spent almost $78,000 for Manhattan fundraiser consultant Tucker Green Consulting, while Schnirman paid Tucker Green $26,116, reports show.

Finally, Singh is in prison

                                                                                   Eight years after Harendra Singh pleaded guilty to bribing Nassau County and Oyster Bay Town officials in exchange for $20 million in personal loan guarantees, the former Oyster Bay restaurateur has been incarcerated. Singh reported to federal prison in Otisville, NY on Friday. He originally was supposed to begin serving his four-year sentence last January but received several unexplained extensions. Otisville, according to the Chicago Tribune,  has tennis courts, horseshoes, cardio equipment  "and it sounds like the closest thing the federal prison system has to sleepaway camp." Nassau CSEA contract deal -- talk of the county for two days -- finally announced (UPDATED)

Talk around Nassau County for the past two days has been that Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman had struck a new labor agreement, signed Monday, with the county's largest union, the Nassau Civil Service Employees Association. The CSEA, which include most non-law enforcement county employees, has been working without a contract since the end of 2017. As of June, there were 3,359 fulltime CSEA members. An announcement went out late today but it didn't say much: A spokesman for Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman did not respond to an email today asking when the CSEA deal would be announced. Everyone is looking at the CSEA because exempt employees -- county workers who are hired and fired at will -- traditionally are given the same benefits as the union members. But the exempts are not happy with some of the rumors about the agreement: one is that the CSEA will take a lesser health insurance plan in return for an upfront payment, perhaps of $1,500, for each member....
