Denenberg enters Congressional District 4 race

David Denenberg

Former Nassau Legis. David Denenberg, a Merrick Democrat, has thrown his hat into the race for the 4th Congressional District now held by first-term U.S. Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, an Island Park Republican.

Records show that Denenberg yesterday filed his campaign committee "Denenberg for Congress" with the Federal Elections Commission.

Denenberg was a popular, hard-working legislator, He was first elected in a majority  Republican district  in 1999 and served until Jan. 2015 when he was taken down by allegations from his then law firm, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron, that he had overbilled a client by more than $2 million.

He pleaded guilty to eight felony counts of mail fraud in January 2015 and resigned his legislative seat.

Denenberg served three months in prison and made retribution.

The charges and subsequent guilty plea had strong political overtones at the time because Denenberg was seeking election to the District 8 State Senate Seat vacated by Republican Chuck Fuschillo. Denenberg's campaign was a threat to then powerful State Sen. Dean Skelos, a Rockville Centre Republican, who was co-majority leader of the state Senate.*

Skelos himself was subsequently convicted of federal corruption charges in part for using his position to influence the award of a county contract to a company that employed his son.

He also served time in federal prison.

After Denenberg was released from prison, he has continued to work on environmental issues, which originally led him to elective office.

Now he is apparently looking to get back into the political game.

Among the Democrats who also are seeking the Democrat nomination are former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen and former State Sen. Kevin Thomas of Levittown, who was drawn out of his state senate seat. Both have been actively campaigning and fundraising for the Congressional seat.

*Corrected the state senate seat that Denenberg had sought before his conviction.
