Former GOP assemblyman to become TOH Board counsel

Former GOP Assemblyman Thomas Alfano, who had been deputy general counsel at the Nassau University Medical Center before joining the well-known Lake Success law firm of Abrams Fensterman, is poised to become counsel to the town board in the Republican-controlled Town of Hempstead. A personnel resolution for next week's town board meeting calls for the ratification of Supervisor Don Clavin's appointment of Alfano as the $165,000 counsel to the town board, effective Aug. 10. Alfano, a Republican,  represented North Valley Stream in the Democrat-controlled New York State Assembly from 1996 through 2010, when he decided against seeking re-election. He became deputy general counsel to the Nassau Health Care Corp, which runs the East Meadow hospital and associated facilities, in 2014 for a salary of $199,000. Like the late John Ciotti, who was general counsel for NUMC until his death in 2017, Alfano was a protege of Nassau Republican Chairman Joe Cairo, the longtime N

100 homeless families to be moved into Jericho School District

The Jericho School district has notified residents that the Hampton Inn on Jericho Turnpike in Jericho was recently sold and will be converted into housing for homeless families. The Jericho School District has regularly been rated among the top ten in the nation. As a result, houses in the district command premium prices. It is unclear who bought the closed hotel, but Nassau County Social Services is working with a non-profit-agency, Community Housing Incentive, to renovate the three-story building to house as many as 100 families, said Town of Oyster Bay spokesman Brian Nevin. Nevin said the town, after being contacted by Jericho residents, reached out to the county to find out what is going on. He said the town was told there are currently 15 homeless families living in Jericho. The county is looking for one facility to house 100 of Nassau's homeless families, he said. The school district notice says it was told that the new families being moved into Jericho will

$3 million deal with Looks Great withdrawn

Amid questions from Nassau Democrats, County Executive Laura Curran has pulled back a proposed $3 million deal with a Huntington tree-trimming firm that was paid more than $60 million by the Republican administration of former County Executive Ed Mangano to clean up after Superstorm Sandy. Democrat Curran's Commissioner of Shared Services Melissa Gallucci last week submitted a proposed $3 million "blanket purchase order" with Looks Great Services Inc. for tree trimming and stump grinding. The submitted paperwork said Looks Great was the lowest of two competitive bidders. But the staff summary didn't specify a start date or a termination date, which is unusual. It was also unclear if blanket purchase orders, which are used to provide routine repeated services, contain the same provisions as regular contracts for such things as indemnification and minority hiring. After Superstorm Sandy hit at the end of Oct. 2012, Looks Great seemed to be everywhere clearing up

Elected officials: Police rally singer "a bigot" (Updated three times)

Image
After the Nassau PBA posted an invitation on its Facebook page to attend a "Back the Blue" rally at Eisenhower Park tomorrow, there was immediate pushback. Democratic elected officials and others were outraged, but not by the rally itself. After all, demonstrations have popped up out across Long Island in support of police after thousands of Black Lives Matters protestors demanded the defunding of police following the May 25 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of city police officers. Instead, they were incensed over the choice of national anthem singer:  Ted Nugent Nugent is a hard-rock musician who has been around since the 1960s. But comments made by the now-71-year-old conservative singer have angered many people around the country, leading six elected Nassau Democrats to issue this statement: “Ted Nugent is a bigot.” said the legislature's Minority leader Kevan Abrahams of Freeport along with Democratic legislators Siela Bynoe of West
