Two Nassau villages impose curfews

Two of the mayors in Nassau's Five Towns have issued curfews for their villages tonight in apparent reaction to a planned protest in Far Rockaway.

"Today, June 2, 2020 at 2:30 pm, Mayor Benjamin Weinstock of Cedarhurst and Mayor Alex Edelman of Lawrence issued Emergency Proclamations declaring village-wide curfews for Cedarhurst and Lawrence from 7:00 pm tonight until 6:00 am tomorrow morning.  During this time no persons or vehicles may be in public, with limited exceptions," said emails that went out to community members at 3:30 p.m.

The mayors had already expressed worries to the LIHerald about security for the protest that is planned by the Mott Avenue train station in Far Rockaway beginning at 6 p.m.

Protests over the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis have turned into riots across the county. Lootings and assaults have been videotaped from New York City to Los Angeles.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio have issued curfews for the city, but apparently even village mayors have that authority under state executive law.

Here is what the law says:

"Notwithstanding any inconsistent provision of law, general or special, in the event of a disaster, rioting, catastrophe, or similar public emergency within the territorial limits of any county, city, town or village, or in the event of reasonable apprehension of immediate danger thereof, and upon a finding by the chief executive thereof that the public safety is imperiled thereby, such chief executive may proclaim a local state of emergency within any part or all of the territorial limits of such local government;  provided, however, that in the event of a radiological accident as defined in section twenty-nine-c of this article, such chief executive may request of the governor a declaration of disaster emergency."
