Blakeman wins the first round against Hochul mask mandate (Updated with Hochul comment)

Image
Bruce Blakeman on Fox News talking about Gov. Kathy Hochul's mask mandate A Nassau Supreme Court justice today ruled that Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul's mask mandate is illegal, giving Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman a big win. The decision by Justice Thomas Rademaker says essentially that Hochul did not have the authority to bypass required legislative approval and delegate the power to issue the mask mandate to the state health department -- an agency she controls. "To allow such agency lawmaking would result in laws being changed at the whim of every new commissioner who could then be said to be beholden to their appointor but also it would surely result in a lack of representative government where...

Zimmerman sweeps North Hempstead Democratic endorsements

Looks like Robert Zimmerman, a Great Neck public relations guru and longtime Democratic National Committeeman, has vacuumed up all the important endorsements from North Hempstead Democratic notables in his primary race for Congress. And that has to be putting a crimp in former Democratic North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman's campaign for the same North Shore seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, a former Democratic Nassau County executive who ...

No "transparency" in secret NUMC appointments

Image
Jason Abelove (from Newsday "LI PEOPLE ON THE MOVE" Jan.17) Ever notice that the more a politician or government agency asserts transparency, the less transparent they are? Now we know, weeks later, that Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, a Democrat who lost her bid for a second term,  recommended Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul make at least two new appointments to the board of the Nassau Health Care Corp. before Curran left office at the end of December. Curran nominated two Democrats who also lost their bids for public office last year: Jason Abelove who challenged incumbent Republican Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin, and Lisa Daniels, who made her second run against Legis. Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence)...

Despite favorable headlines, Hochul hasn't made much headway

Image
Gov Kathy Hochul beside the Rev. Al Sharpton at Brooklyn Academy of Music on Martin Luther King Day (from realclearpolitics.com) Gov. Kathy Hochul dominates the Democratic primary field for governor, according to headlines from the Siena College Research Institute, which released a new poll of New York voters today. But statistics can say a lot of different things, depending on what you want them to say. Although Hochul is a clear favorite at this point against Democratic challengers, she really hasn't moved the needle much in popularity statewide - despite holding near daily news conferences. Siena asked voters whether they had a favorable or unfavorable opinion of Hochul in mid-September, soon after Hochul, N...

Did Democrats cry wolf over Blakeman inauguration?

Start of Nassau county executive Bruce Blakeman inauguration on Jan. 3 with county legislators in front; dignitaries on the stage It's been more than two weeks since Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman was sworn in at an indoor ceremony at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden city amid doom-and-gloom warnings from Nassau Democrats. So far, there are no reports of widespread coronavirus infections among officials and attendees despite a reported 2-to-5 day infection period for the highly contagious Omicron variant. The only report of covid infections are among Nassau Democrats who did not attend the inauguration. Remember, Nassau Democrats called for the ceremony to be postpo...
