Todd Kaminsky  urged supporters today to join him in congratulating Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas on her confirmation by the state senate to serve as a judge on New York's highest court, the Court of Appeals. The Long Beach Democrat noted in an email, sent this morning, that he voted to confirm fellow Democrat Singas on Monday. Kaminsky had already tweeted and posted on his Facebook page his congratulations to Singas on Monday. But Kaminsky made no mention in his email of the woman who succeeded Singas in the district attorney's office: he did not congratulate Joyce Smith, an executive assistant district attorney who was sworn in Tuesday by Singas in Mineola to be Nassau'...

Members of the Court of Appeals are entitled to have chambers in their home county courthouse. For example, former Chief Judge Sol Wachtler of North Hempstead had chambers in Mineola before the then well-respected Republican judge temporarily lost his mind in the early 1990s and harassed a former mistress.                                                                                 Ed Farbenblum in 2019, from Syracuse.com Now we know that Nassau County Executive Laura Curran's lack of a response about NUMC was, in fact, a response. Curran yesterday announced she had named Ed Farbenblum, a lawyer from the the Five Towns who is involved in nursing homes, to be the new chairman of the Nassau University Medical Center. Curran's staff on May 28 did not respond to an inquiry as to whether Farbenblum was the county executive's choice to to replace Robert Detor as chairman of NuHealth, the public benefit corporation that runs the hospital in East Meadow and related facilities. If you're not a local political buff, it's possible you may have missed the latest posts involving New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello. The posts are interesting, but not surprising, given politics in New York. First there's Cuomo.  Nearly the entire New York State Democratic party has called on Cuomo to resign because of allegations of sexual harassment, misuse of government employees, bullying fellow elected officials and cover-up of the actual number of coronavirus nursing home deaths. Cuomo has denied any wrongdoing. Amid all the terrible publicity, it seems nearly inconceivable that Cuomo would seek re-election to a fourth term next year. But he has begun to inch up in the polls statewide as he continues to hold frequent news conferences while touting his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.                                                                              Nassau County Executive Laura Curran warned legislators in March: "For the first time in years, the county faces significant class one refund liability." In English, that means the county could owe a significant amount in property tax refunds to single-family homeowners who went to court and successfully argued their house values were too high as a result of Curran's 2018 reassessment. But Curran didn't say how much the county owed. Now we know Curran's budget office estimates at least $17 million will have to be paid to homeowners this year. That doesn't include interest.
